When heavy machinery or components are being transported, these loads can be subject to tremendous forces. Direct lashing is a method of ensuring that the restraining forces necessary to keep the load securely positioned on the loading platform are applied with maximum reliability.

However, this requires lashing points to be available on both the load itself and the loading platform. By extension, load securing is something that must be considered already in the phase of design, and the manufacturer or rather the designer is responsible for it
LASHING POINTS
Load securing – an introduction
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
The existence of a host of legal regulations and technical guidelines also underscores the fact that machine and component manufacturers must pay attention to the issue of securing loads.
Since the end of 2009, Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has been binding in European law. It contains the statement “Machinery, or each component part thereof, must be capable of being handled and transported safely…“, thereby obliging the manufacturer to construct a product that permits transportation.
In Germany, paragraph 1, section 22 of the national road traffic act stipulates that when loads are being secured, “acknowledged rules of technology shall be observed“. These rules refer above all to DIN and EN standards, and they also encompass guidelines issued by the Association of German Engineers (VDI). The scope of paragraph 1, section 22 of Germany‘s road traffic act is not restricted
a particular party – instead, it applies to everyone who is responsible for handling loads. In other words, manufacturers are also required to take the standards and guidelines relating to the issue of load security into account in their work.
DIN EN 474-1 is of particular importance in this regard. This document on “Earth-moving machinery – Safety – Part 1: General requirements“ requires these items of machinery to possess (clearly marked) lashing points.
VDI 2700-13, “Securing loads for road vehicles – Oversized and heavy load transportation“ takes an even closer look at the issue and stipulates that, where necessary, manufacturers and transport planners must take suitable steps for technical coordination as early as in the construction phase. For many years now, lorries, trailers and semi-trailers with flatbed have had
to include features (lashing points) for anchoring lashing equipment so loads can be transported safely. This requirement is detailed in Germany‘s regulation for preventing vehicle accidents, DGUV regulation 70. The DIN-EN 12640 (“Lashing points on commercial vehicles“) a source of instructions. Despite all of these rules and regulations, problems frequently arise on a day-to-day level. It makes sense to take a look at these activities and establish a close level of cooperation between transport technicians and manufacturers.

Attention: ISO 15818 has been in effect since March 2017. It is the first standard to define worldwide performance requirements for lifting and lashing points for earth-moving machinery. All RUD lifting and lashing points comply with this standard.
GUIDELINES
Correct load securing
-
It should be possible to recognise lashing points clearly and quickly, and they should also display the permitted lashing capacity.
-
A sufficient number of lashing points with the necessary lashing force should be provided.
-
It should be possible to replace lashing points easily if they are damaged.
-
Lashing points should have a distinctive plastic deformation before they fail – to make damage visible.
-
The nominal lashing capacity of a lashing point should be introducible in all anticipated loading directions; in the ideal case it should be loadable from any direction.
-
Lashing points should have a safety factor of 2:1.
-
It should be possible to access lashing points easily.
-
The design of lashing points should permit the closure of the lashing hook’s safety latch.
-
Lashing points should suit the design of the lashing hook and not require additional adapters or components such as shackles.
-
Lashing points should ensure that the lashing hooks connected to them are subjected to loads in the correct manner (loads are borne by the bed of the hook; no bending).
-
Lashing points should be positioned so “direct strand” lashing is possible, i.e. lashing means do not run around any edges.
-
Lashing points should be positioned so that proper lashing angles are possible – reference figure of α; β ≈ 30°.
The following list includes a few practical hints for design.
Often, lifting points are used for lashing. However, they display their working load limit WLL [t] instead of the permitted lashing capacity – LC [daN]. NB: lashing points and lifting points are subject to different safety factors.
The use of RUD lashing points is recommended to ensure that day-to-day requirements can be met adequately. These features are not only high-strength and subject to testing, but they have also proven their worth under everyday conditions. An excellent example of German-made quality, the meet all of the requirements mentioned here, including the presence of a stamp displaying their permitted LC (lashing capacity [daN]).
RUD has developed a wide range of ultra-strong lashing points. As the illustrations show (p.4), well-known manufacturers have long made ample use of these components: eyelets made of forged, high-quality alloy steel. Joining the range of popular weldable items (certified welders can retrofit existing equipment) are RUD’s threaded lashing points with LC marking.
