Why Snowchains

WHY SNOWCHAINS

Snow and icy conditions often take drivers in South Africa & Lesotho by surprise. Even a 4x4 can lose traction when driving on snow or ice. Drivers find themselves ill-equipped to drive on the snow or ice covered road. This leads to a loss of traction between tyre and road surface and the inability to steer the vehicle. A layer of ice on a road, hidden by snow, as well as 'black ice' also cause havoc while driving.

Safety first! Pack a pair (or two) of snow chains for your vehicle.

Choosing snowchains

CHOOSING SNOWCHAINS

Here are a few pointers when selecting snow chains.

  • All our chains are manufactured from case harden rim link chain (square chain, not round)

  • Chains are designed for easy fitment (click here to view videos of chain fitment)

  • Some chains can be used on both sides of the vehicle

  • The more expensive chains have additional traction plates

  • In principle:

    • more chain equals more traction, to the point where where the tyre is 100% covered and we then sell a tyre protection chain

    • more chain equals more protection to the tyre

    • more chain crossing over the tyre relates to more traction

  • Snow chains can be viewed on our website (cars, 4x4's & commercial vehicles or the complete catalogue downloaded, which includes a comparative guide

  • Over the past few years with have had great success with the Grip V Chains and would suggest that a customer views these chains as a potential option.

  • We can make a recommendation based on your vehicle (car, 4x4 or commercial vehicle) and budget Contact us

Useful Tips

TIPS ON HOW TO DRIVE SAFELY IN THE SNOW AND ICY CONDITIONS WITH SNOWCHAINS

Snow chains are very beneficial, especially in the snow and icy conditions that one could find in South Africa and Lesotho regions. Whether you are in a car or 4×4 you can lose traction on the snow or ice very easily. When drivers are not properly equipped to drive on the snow or ice, it could lead to loss of traction between tyre and road surface and the inability to steer the vehicle.

You can only use snow chains when there is a good layer of compacted snow or ice. Driving on a road that has been cleared may cause damage to both the vehicle and the road. Driving too fast with the snow chains could cause them to fail, the recommended maximum speed when driving with snow chains is 30 to 50km/h.

All our chains are manufactured from case harden rim link chain. The chains are designed for easy fitment and can be used on both sides of the vehicle. The more chain you have the more traction you will have. Over the past few years we have had great success with the Grip V Chains and would suggest that a customer views these chains as a potential option.

TIPS ON WHAT TO DO IF YOUR WHEELS SKID IN THE SNOW

Rear Wheels: - Take your foot off the accelerator. - Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right. - If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control. - If you have standard brakes, pump them gently. - If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse - this is normal. Front wheels skid: - Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately. - As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.
